Good Works Are All Around

Well reported of for good works; if [a widow] have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. —1 TIMOTHY 5:10 KJV

Often when we read the Bible, we miss its practicality. In Ephesians 2:10, for example, Paul tells us that we are created for “good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (KJV).

How many times do we read this and wonder, “What good works am I supposed to do for God?” We may spend hours in prayer, laboring to find God’s will and discover the works we are to do.

But the Bible shows us not many pages later—and from the same pen as Ephesians—the good works of a woman and services that believers of either sex can provide. In 1 Timothy 5, we see that our good works include being faithful spouses, bringing up children, showing hospitality to strangers and fellow believers, and helping those in distress.

Good work is not a mystery that we have to meditate to find.

We just need to see the needs around us and meet them as God gives us the strength and resources to do so.

That’s practical—and pure—Christianity.

Father, how often I have wondered about Your will for my life, thinking it was something grand and glorious. But Your Word says it’s all around me. Help me to see and follow the good works that are within my reach.
