Handle with Care!

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.—PROVERBS 16:20 KJV

As caregivers, we learn to handle our patients with care—both physically and emotionally. When we’re faced with tough situations, we need to let wisdom lead the way. We should move slowly and carefully. We can’t “knee-jerk.” Handling others with wisdom and care is one of God’s keys to happiness.

How do we handle matters wisely? Let’s say we’re caring for someone who’s in a bitter frame of mind—perhaps due to deep-rooted physical or emotional pain. They snap at us, even when we’re giving our all. “Handling with care” means we take a deep breath before responding. We don’t repay evil with evil, even when we’re tempted beyond belief. We treat that person as Christ would treat him or her.

Is it easy to handle with care? Not always. But it’s worth it. In many cases, those people who’ve been gently handled will later apologize for their outbursts. But even if they don’t, we have the satisfaction of knowing we’ve reacted the way the Lord called us to.

Dear Lord, guard my knee-jerking! As I seek to become more like You, grant me the wisdom to treat those I care for with tenderness and mercy.
