Homemade Applesauce

A delicious side dish recipe for fall!

They say the best things in life are free, and picking crisp, juicy apples in our backyard was a highlight for us kids during the Great Depression. Mama would peel ’em, throw them into a big pot on the stove and make homemade applesauce.

Money isn’t as tight as it used to be (not quite!), but I still enjoy this simple dish for dessert, breakfast or a treat between meals.

Ingredients

12 Rome apples

3 cups water, or enough to cover apples in saucepan

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon cinnamon

Preparation

1. Peel apples and cut into slices. Place in large saucepan. Cover with water.

2. Cook apples until tender and slightly mushy. Add sugar, butter and cinnamon. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until apples are soft, and the sugar, butter and cinnamon are well blended.

3. Mash with fork or potato masher. Makes one quart.
