Christmas Eve always began for us with a delivery of my mother-in-law’s homemade candy. Instead I’d started the day with a disappointing phone call. “I’m so sorry your Christmas candy won’t arrive on time this year,” my mother-in-law said. “I just got the package off a few hours ago.” We were in New Jersey; she lived in Ohio. The candy wouldn’t get here until after Christmas. Especially with all the snow we’d been having.

I was about to tell my family when the doorbell rang. It was a man with a long white beard and a big smile on his face. “Merry Christmas,” he said as he handed me a large box. I turned to set the package down. When I stood back up the deliveryman was gone! And every trace of him was gone too: No footprints in the snow leading up to the house and no car on the street. Come to think of it, he didn’t appear to be a deliveryman at all.

It all was very mysterious—but not as mysterious as what was in the box he’d brought: our annual box of homemade candy from my mother-in-law! They say the post office works overtime during the holidays. Now I know that angels do too.
