The Good Doctor

Guideposts Editor-in-Chief Edward Grinnan talks about Sanjay Gupta’s inspirational story in the April 2011 issue.

Edward Grinnan

I’ll make it easy for you this month. Go to page 30 of the April 2011 issue of Guideposts for my article about why I wrote the new book The Promise of Hope: How True Stories of Hope and Inspiration Saved My Life and How They Can Transform Yours and find out how you can order your copy today and also get the free hardcover collection of my Daily Guideposts devotionals, 101 Moments of Hope. And that’s enough about me!

Let’s talk about April’s cover, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and not just because we both went to the University of Michigan (about 15 years apart) and he grew up just a few towns over from me (our high school teams played each other).

If you follow Sanjay’s reporting you know how incredibly busy he is, and he still performs surgery and teaches medicine at Emory University. So we were honored he would take time to meet with Senior Editor Celeste McCauley, who flew down to CNN headquarters in Atlanta. Celeste brought her video camera and you can visit Sanjay’s office and hear him talk about the best advice his mother ever gave him and his favorite books.

I first became aware of Sanjay’s work when he was reporting from Iraq at the beginning of the war and put down his microphone to perform emergency brain surgery on a gravely wounded Iraqi boy. I’d never seen anything like that in television news. I remember thinking that someday he might be a good subject for Guideposts.

I’ve watched his reporting from Haiti, Pakistan and many other places where people are struggling and suffering, and his work fills me with pride. Sanjay Gupta represents the best of America, a country that cares about the rest of the world and the people in it. For me, he is a doctor of hope as well as a doctor of medicine.

Enjoy this issue of Guideposts as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you.
