Past & Present

A walk down Memory Lane at an assisted living center provides a chance to fete an inspiring couple of long standing.

“Sarah, you haven’t changed since you were eighteen!” Henri yelled, taking a bite of wedding cake.

“That’s not me!” Sarah called back. “I didn’t marry a soldier. That must be Dottie!”

Dottie, dressed in all red, with long pink beads around her neck, woke up suddenly from her recliner. “What?”

“Oh, Dottie,” said Sarah, “Prince William could walk into this room right now, and you would still be snoring.”

Sherri, the activities director at Morning Side Assisted Living, held up a photo of a groom in uniform with a radiant bride.

Usually the receptionist, I was serving as Sherri’s assistant for our annual Valentine’s Day party. When Sherri first told me her plan to have the residents bring wedding photos to the party, I had my doubts.

“Don’t you think it will make everyone sad?” I asked her. “It will just remind them that they’re old.”

“Nonsense,” Sherri said. “We’ll make a game of trying to guess who’s in the pictures!”

Invitations were sent out to all our residents. The parlor was packed with walkers, recliners and wheelchairs.

No one recognized the young bride and groom in the photo. “Start the wedding march!” Sherri said. “This picture is of Marie and her husband!”

All eyes turned to watch the happy couple walk toward the front, hand in hand, looking like the lovebirds they still were. Sherri had a special prize waiting.

Love was a joy at any age.
