Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. I Peter 2:11 (MSG)

A sign outside a church on my way to work proclaims a haunting message, Eternity: It’s Forever.

Since my teen years, when I was diagnosed with the multisystem disorder neurofibromatosis, I’ve undergone countless medical treatments and more than twenty major surgeries. The night before each operation, I strived to settle things with God in the event that this time I would meet Him in the hereafter.

I thought I had faced my own mortality. But it’s only been during this year of intense soul-searching that I’ve finally done so. And I haven’t always liked what I’ve seen.

I’ve discovered traces of pride in my heart, unforgiveness, ingratitude, impatience and a host of other characteristics that are displeasing to God. And I’ve learned a thing or two about what brings our Father pleasure: empathy, celebrating our creativity, letting go of grudges, being grateful for every precious gift.

What I’ve discovered is that each day is a lifetime in miniature. Living with eternity in view all boils down to how I live my life every single day, 365 days a year. Each day is all there is.

This year I’ve grown to love life here on earth more than ever before. But I also long to be in heaven with Jesus. One heavenly delight will be at long last meeting each of you, dear readers, and knowing on that blessed day that our lives have mattered.

Dear God, what things of eternal significance do You have for me to do today?
