Father’s Day cards were taped to the wardrobe in the hospice room. As he came through the door, my brother, Doug, brushed one open. It was a musical card, and Doug quickly pressed it shut before it disturbed Dad. I glanced at him in his bed, fast asleep.

“Let’s tape this closed,” Doug said, “or it might bother him.”

“But it plays his favorite song,” I said. “He might enjoy hearing it.” Doug had helped his kids pick out the card for that reason. They knew how much their granddad loved Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”

“We should give Dad and ourselves a break,” my husband, Celso, said. “The card plays every time someone passes that wardrobe.” Doug and Celso taped the card shut.

A few days later we all stood near as Dad passed from this life. The room was still and quiet. Then suddenly there was music. “I see trees of green…red roses too. I see them bloom…for me and you. And I think to myself…what a wonderful world.”

How could the card play when it was still taped shut? We knew we’d been sent a clear, comforting message from the wonderful world where Dad was now.

Listen to Louis Armstrong sing Cyndy's dad's favorite song!
