Heaven’s Music: Inspired to Cut a Rug

Would her big band sounds inspire these seniors to get up and dance? They’re not called the Greatest Generation for nothing!

Glenn Miller blows the trumpet
I stuck one last bobby pin in my hair and checked my bright red lipstick in the mirror at the local dance hall. “John,” I called to my husband, “it’s showtime!”

John and I performed in a 21-piece Glenn Miller tribute band. John played tenor sax and I was one of the lead singers. We all dressed as if it were the 1940s. I hope people get up and dance, I thought as I took the stage. But as I looked out at the elderly audience, I figured they were here to listen only. Surely their dancing days were behind them.

The place was packed. I walked up to the microphone in my back-seam panty hose and brown pumps and sang the first lines to “Sentimental Journey.” They probably remembered dancing to this song when Doris Day made it a No. 1 hit in 1945. The dance floor filled. Some of these couples were really good!

Vibrant and full of energy after all these years, this community was still together, still dancing. I guess that’s the secret to staying young at heart.

I looked over at my husband, blowing on the sax. He winked at me. At the end of the song, I closed my eyes and took my own sentimental journey into the future with a prayer. In 25 years, I imagined John and I being just like the youthful couples here: still together, still dancing.

Listen to the sentimental sounds of Glenn Miller!
