The Warmth of Friendship

She didn’t get to see her best pal as often she’d like to, but the silly socks she’d given her helped a little.

Shawnelle Eliasen's pumpkin socks

I sat in the living room folding laundry, missing my friend Dee. We only lived 30 miles apart but our crazy schedules made it feel like the distance was much farther. We hadn’t been able to get together in ages.

With the summer warmth turning cool, now was the perfect time to share a cup of tea. I picked up the phone. “Tomorrow, Dee,” I said, “are you free? Please say yes!”

“Shawnelle, I’m sorry,” she said. “This whole week’s packed.” I checked ahead on our calendar. It was full with activities for my five sons. Dee was caring for her mom and helping out at church. We settled on a date a whole month away.

I hung up and got back to my chores. First I’d tackle an overflowing basket of socks—athletic socks, dress socks, extralong soccer socks. But right on top? A pumpkin-print sock with big, smiling jack-o’-lanterns. They’d been a gift from Dee.

She had a tradition of buying novelty socks for her daughters and started giving them to me too. My drawers teemed with a star-spangled pair for the Fourth of July, red-and-pink hearts for Valentine’s Day, even bunny ears and eggs for Easter.

I picked up my Halloween sock and rooted through the pile for its match. I tugged the pair over my feet. Tiny, stuffed pumpkin heads rested at my ankles. Fun reminders of our friendship.

Dee and I may have to wait for that cup of tea. In the meantime those warm and cozy socks kept her close to my heart.
