Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey. Psalm 119:105 (The Daily Life Bible)

After many months’ absence, I saw a friend the other day and couldn’t help notice there was less of her to notice. Her energy level was even higher than normal for her. She seemed happier with herself. I knew better than to ask, but it’s tradition, isn’t it?

“How did you do it? How did you lose the weight and get healthier?” I could have guessed her answer. It’s the one I’ve heard most frequently, no matter what the exercise routine, supplement, or even surgery that accompanies dramatic weight loss when the goal is to get healthier. Lower the carb intake.

How often have we heard another bit of wisdom? “If you want to grow closer to Jesus, up your intake of the Word of God. Read, study, meditate on, and apply what the Bible has to say, and you will not only know Jesus better, but you’ll find yourself empowered to follow Him.”

That basic counsel never changes. But have we changed to match its wisdom, to adopt the advice into our daily lives? Or do we listen and nod–Yes, great idea–but go back to ingesting a diet of things that aren’t spiritually healthy for us and do nothing to help our soul’s health or energy?

“The pounds melted away,” my friend told me, “when I started to get serious about eating smart and applying myself to the right kind of exercise.” “The fears and doubts melted away,” she could have said, “when I started to seriously pursue knowing Jesus better through His Word.”

Faith step: Feeling spiritually sluggish? Start with the basic, age-old sage advice–get more of God’s Word into your daily diet. Followed faithfully, it can’t help but yield results.
