My mother-in-law, whom everyone called Grandma Mae, was a great cook.

For holiday and Sunday dinners, she would often spend all day in the kitchen.

When Grandma Mae passed away three years ago, it fell to my husband and me to clean out her house. One of my jobs was clearing out her kitchen. I opened drawers and cabinets, getting caught up in the memories that those simple utensils and bowls held. What to do with 50 years of a woman’s craft?

The next morning, I awoke with an idea: Grandma Mae’s Kitchen to Go. I bought five big tote bags and filled each with pans, plates, cups, measuring spoons, knives, silverware, towels and more—enough to start a new kitchen. (Yes, she had that much of everything!) I included a note, telling each recipient about Grandma Mae and my hopes that the items would bring joy.

The women’s shelter I donated them to said the bags helped families start new lives. I’m sure Grandma Mae would appreciate being a part of so many new memories.
