For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

Whenever I feel inadequate or feel I don’t have the ability to accomplish something, I remember a lady I once met when I applied for a job. She was the receptionist and her desk was located behind a wall with a sliding glass window. When I tapped on the window, she smiled and asked, “How may I help you?”

I told her I was applying for a job, and then stood amazed as I got a better look at her. The sleeves of her blouse were sewn up at the shoulders because she had no arms. She slid open the window with her foot and gave me an application. She turned to me again and smiled. “Do you need anything else?” she asked. “Yes, ma’am, I forgot my pen.” She handed me a pen.

While completing my application, I couldn’t help glancing up at her. She typed, filed, answered the phone, and performed all of her tasks with her feet. She was smiling, and seemed polite and friendly. I quickly looked down every time she turned my direction. I didn’t want to stare, but it was difficult not to. I was in awe.

I didn’t get the job, but when I think of that lady I am still in awe. She was a testament of good stewardship. The receptionist used the gifts the Lord gave her with grace and dignity.

Jesus wants us to use our gifts and talents to the best of our abilities. We might not think that we have much to offer the world, but Jesus has good works for each of us to accomplish, using our specific set of gifts. If we use our gifts and talents well, our lives can leave a lasting mark and inspire others for years and years.

Faith Step: Thank Jesus for your abilities and gifts today. Know that He has prepared good works, in advance, for you to accomplish.
