Christmas in May

Marci Alborghetti continues The Christmas Glass in Three Kings Day.

Most of my time here at GuidepostsBooks is spent on our annual devotional, Daily Guideposts. Once in a while, though, I get to try my hand at other things, usually books on prayer or the spiritual life. It’s the rare day when I have something outside my comfort zone to work on. Today is one of those days.

I found a surprise in my email box—the manuscript of a new novel, Three Kings Day, by Marci Alborghetti. It takes up where her last novel, The Christmas Glass, left off, and it features many of the same characters, as well as some new ones.

If you’ve read The Christmas Glass (and if you haven’t, you should) you’ll remember that the story revolves around an extraordinary collection of hand-blown ornaments, their dispersal and their eventual reunion at a remarkable Christmas dinner.

This new novel takes the story forward to the 12 days of Christmas a year later and concentrates on the guardians of the ornaments of the Three Kings—Gaspar, Balthazar and Melchior as they are named in legend.

I wish I could tell you what happens, to whom and how in this new story, but I can’t, and not just because I don’t want to spoil the surprise. I won’t know myself until I’ve printed out the typescript and read it. And that’s one of the gifts and privileges of being an editor—squaring up that pile of pages on your desk, turning them over one by one, and being one of the first to explore the world they bring to life.

So this May I’ll be celebrating an early Christmas and doing what I can to help Marci give you the most exciting holiday story since The Christmas Glass. Look for it in 2011!
