Unexpected Aid for Couple Hit by Superstorm Sandy

A good reporter rallies people to help in times of tragedy. My friend got to answer her own call to arms.

Mysterious Ways blogger Adam Hunter

My friend Jennifer Janisch is a reporter and producer for CBS News, a job that suits her well. She’s one of the most caring people I know, and you can bet that wherever there is suffering or injustice in the world, Jenny will find it and bring it to wider attention.

In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Jenny traveled to the Rockaways to speak with the families there who had lost nearly everything. She filmed and produced a report about the volunteers who came out to help the recovery. One man she interviewed told a story that particularly tugged at her heart: His home had nearly been swept away by Sandy’s surging tides–everything in it was completely destroyed.

To Jenny, bringing attention to the plight of those left devastated by the storm just wasn’t enough. She ached to do more. But what? When she returned home to the city, she had an idea. She’d recently bought an apartment in Brooklyn and needed to get rid of furniture that wouldn’t make the move. Two chairs, a loveseat, a table, a charcoal grill. What if she donated those items to Sandy victims?

Jenny put an ad online listing the items she had to offer. That’s when something amazing happened:

When I saw Jenny’s post on Facebook, I just knew I had to share it with you. It’s pretty incredible. But as I’ve seen throughout my years editing Mysterious Ways stories, when people take the opportunity to help others, connections like these are a common reward.

The victims of Sandy still need our assistance, especially now with the weather in the Northeast getting so cold. Keep them in your prayers and offer what you can.

We’re always on the lookout for Mysterious Ways stories. See something in the news? Have your own experience to share? Send it to us so we can share it with others.
