A Winning Catch

Joe Torre’s daughter was in the right place at the right time…

As some of you may know, I’m a baseball fan, and my favorite team is the New York Yankees.

Unfortunately, the Yanks have been hard to watch at times this year. Injuries, an aging roster and a lack of prospects are troubling. But if the Yankees are looking for a catcher to rival Jorge Posada and Yogi Berra, they might want to sign the daughter of former Yankees manager Joe Torre.

Cristina Torre was in the right place at the right time last Wedensday morning, biking to work along Third Avenue when something odd caught her eye. She slowed down to get a better look. A young boy, who looked to be only a year old, was hanging from the awning of a frozen yogurt shop.

She positioned herself under the awning and called 911. Just as she did, the boy fell… right into her arms.

“I’m still really shook from it,” a witness told the New York Post. “I really think the baby would have been dead if it wasn’t for the woman.”

It’s not the first time we’ve heard of a fortunate passerby making a lifesaving catch. I’m a sucker for these kinds of stories—both of my maternal grandparents, as young children, were caught and saved by strangers after falling out windows.

I know better than to expect God to answer my selfish prayers for Robinson Cano to hit 50 home runs or for Derek Jeter’s ankle to miraculously heal. But for today, I’m happy to see the Yankees in the newspaper for a last-second catch that didn’t save a ballgame, but a child’s life.
