How to Trust God Wholeheartedly

The key to a trusting relationship with God is to pray for help with your fears and hesitations.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

It is easy to say you believe in someone until you are called upon to put that belief into practice. When you trust someone, you must be confident that they can handle your life situations with care.

It is not easy to trust others; neither is it always easy to trust God. I sometimes feel it is easier to trust a business I have no relationship with than someone I really do know. I trust that my bank will have the money I deposit electronically available in my account. I write checks from my account and expect every one to be paid, trusting that all parties will keep their agreements. It does not cross my mind that my bank would fail me.

I believe our difficulty with trust is tied to our level of disappointment when someone fails us. If my bank fails me, I can say, “Oh, well” and move on to another. However, there is more of an emotional risk in my relationship with God, and I have to ask myself if I am willing to take that risk.

The scripture asks a lot of us: to trust with our whole hearts. I am sure that given the option, I would choose to trust in the Lord halfheartedly. But that option is not available, so my answer is yes–it is worth the risk. God will never fail me and will always handle whatever I put in his hands with utmost care. I may not have all the pieces, but God always does.

One of my goals in life is to trust in the Lord with all of my heart. Understanding what stops me is motivation to pray and ask God each day to speak to my heart as only he can. I am willing to trust him.

Prayer Point: Whatever your challenges, the key to a trusting relationship with God is to ask for help with your fears and hesitations. It a transforming experience. Pray and ask God to reveal what scares you about trusting him and allow him to give you peace and a heart to move forward. Prayer has helped me, and I know that it will help you too. Try it!

God bless you!
