A lot of a bird’s time is spent perched on an object. I like when they sit because it is easier for me to photograph them.

This great egret was perched near a small bridge on St. Simons Island, Georgia. I photographed him at the end of one of my days and love the beautiful array of colors in the background from the late-day sun.

The National Audubon Society, a conservation organization, chose this beautiful and majestic bird as its symbol. Even though the great egret is not technically called a perching bird or passerine, they spend a lot of time roosting, sleeping and preening on top of objects.

Preening is the process by which birds clean and straighten their feathersimportant for a bird’s survival. Clean and healthy feathers keep the bird weatherproofed and insulated as well as help them fly and find a mate.

It is important to our spiritual wellness to keep our spiritual lives healthy with time spent in prayer, Bible study, worship and fellowship.
