My Refuge and My Shield

The starfish has a tough skin and tiny spines which helps protect it from predators. They are protected by their armor. As Christians, we have an armor. Our shield is the Lord who protects us and cares for us.

There are a few thousand species of starfish in the world. They live in all the world’s oceans and while some live in the tropics, others live in freezing polar water.

The starfish has a tough skin and tiny spines which helps protect it from predators. They are protected by their armor, but it’s not foolproof!

I grew up on St. Simons Island, Georgia, so the beach and its creatures are very familiar. I remember as a small child, my mom made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and took my sisters and me to the beach. Maybe the beach is where I got my passion for birds—who knows!

Last fall, I got several shells and a starfish from my Dad’s house and took them to the beach to photograph. I rarely see sand dollars or starfish for that matter lying around. I placed them at the water’s edge and enjoyed photographing them.

We, too, as Christians have an armor. Our shield is the Lord. He protects us and cares for us. Thank goodness!

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. (Psalm 119:114, NIV)
