My Dog, My Inspiration, Your Prayers

Edward Grinnan’s golden retriever, Millie, has been the recipient of a flood of loving messages and prayers as she undergoes cancer treatment. In gratitude, Edward invites everyone to post their prayers here for all beloved animals and pets.

I want to pray for you for a change!

First an update. I wasn’t going to write about my dog, Millie, and her cancer diagnosis/prognosis for a couple more weeks, but I am getting so many inquiries that I thought I would give you a quick report on her health.

She’s doing well on the medicine—no side effects and, thanks be to the Lord, no further symptoms of cancer since she had her spleen removed in April, though we know we are not out of the woods by any means. It is a day at a time. And each day is a blessing, a gift, a prayer answered. She is an incredible inspiration to me, brave, undeterred and always cheerful (except when her dinner is late and she turns bewildered and downtrodden).

Here is a picture of her leading me up East Mountain on the Appalachian Trail last week Saturday. She got a burger on the grill afterwards for her hard work.

She’s spending the month up at our cabin in the Berkshires with Julee so she can run in the yard and bark at the critters in the woods to her heart’s content. So she can lie on her back in the grass and stare up at the stars. But it is my heart that breaks every Sunday when I have to return to the city for work.

You know the look your dog gives when she knows you are going away. Last Sunday she wouldn’t even do that much. When I went to hug her goodbye she just looked away. None of that matters though when I return on Thursday nights. All is forgiven, and I am given a joyous welcome.

A dog’s capacity for forgiveness is unequaled. Except perhaps by their unqualified love. The two are really the same. What is more loving than forgiveness, especially the forgiveness of a dog?

Your prayers have meant so much to me. So this week I’d like to invite you to post prayers for the pets and animals that you love. Add a picture too if you can. I promise all your prayers will be included in our Monday Morning Prayer Fellowship. It’s the least I can do for you. Please post below or on our Guideposts Facebook page.
