Independence Day for Military Families

This holiday is forever linked to honor and sacrifice. These people are my friends, my community, my support and the hope of the future. I’ve watched as these scenarios have played out before my very eyes. In my heart, the phrase, the home of the free and the brave is real people, making real sacrifices.

The Fourth of July has special meaning for those who have a family member in the military. Yes, it’s our nation’s Independence Day. But for military families, that freedom can never be separated from the price paid by those who serve. From the militia who fought against England for our independence to those who still fight for freedom around the world, this holiday speaks of sacrifice.

Now that I’ve had to send a son to war, this holiday is forever changed. The patriotic music still rings loud, but the stirring strains now bring tears to my eyes. The fireworks are just as glorious, but the explosions seem to represent the echoes of war fought on distant shores. When I think of the birth of this country, I can’t help but remember the sacrifices made by so many.

No longer a concept, patriotism is real. It’s illustrated by what I’ve seen and experienced. I’ve watched it in the set of my son’s shoulders as he boards a bus bound for deployment, forcing himself to leave all he knows and loves to follow through on a commitment of service.

It’s been obvious in the tears of his wife as she waves goodbye, smiling even though she’s all too aware of the job he’s been chosen to do.

I’ve seen it in the sanctuary of a church, as I and other Blue Star Mothers, support the family of a soldier who’s been called to pay the ultimate price.

This holiday is forever linked to honor and sacrifice.

These people are my friends, my community, my support and the hope of the future. I’ve watched as these scenarios have played out before my very eyes. In my heart, the phrase, the home of the free and the brave is real people, making real sacrifices.

So this Fourth of July, think about those who inspired that stirring music and whose willingness to serve made it possible to celebrate. Take time to say a prayer for those who serve and those who love them.
