O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in antimony, and your foundations I will lay in sapphires. (Isaiah 54:11)

Loving someone who is serving in the military brings its own challenges. When our son enlisted in the Marine Corps, I thought I was strong enough to get through those challenges. I’m not superwoman, but I don’t normally buckle under pressure. So I thought my inner core of resiliency would see me through.

Then I faced his first deployment to an active war zone.

That inner core buckled and gave way as I surrendered to fears conjured by my imagination. The thought of the things he’d see, the situations he’d face, the dangers coming at him from every side were more than I could bear.

So I dug deep into my faith and huddled in the protection of God’s all-encompassing wings. I started every day with prayer and Bible reading. I ended every night the same way. I practically lived in the Book of Psalms. The raw emotion of those chapters gave me hope as the author wrote about my fears and my situation.

God and His Word became real to me in ways I never imagined.

On my own, the foundation I’d fashioned was worthless. But when I built my trust on God, I found I could weather any storm.
