Christo’s Art Helps Us See Hidden Wonders

The “Floating Piers” art installation by Christo in Lake Iseo, Italy, was full of miracles and wonder, like walking on water.

Here at Mysterious Ways, we’re fascinated by the immense talent of artists who make us take a second glance at the world to see its hidden wonders. A good artist can open our eyes and introduce us to experiences that transform the everyday world into a glimpse of the divine.

That’s certainly true of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, artistic collaborators responsible for large-scale public arts exhibits like Central Park’s “Gates,”  and “The Umbrellas” in Japan. Their latest work invited visitors to follow in the footsteps of Jesus himself… by walking on water.

From June 18 to July 3, 2016, “The Floating Piers” in Lake Iseo, Italy, used 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric and an assortment of floating cubes to create golden pathways along the water’s surface, rising and falling with the waves. According to Christo, “Those who experienced ‘The Floating Piers’ felt like they were walking on water–or perhaps the back of a whale. The light and water transformed the bright yellow fabric to shades of red and gold throughout the 16 days.”

I didn’t get to visit (not in the Mysterious Ways travel budget), but as these photos from Pier Marco Tacca/Getty Images show, plenty of tourists and locals (and a few ducks) enjoyed walking like Jesus walked:
