Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. (James 1:27, NLT)
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Last month I shared about the four-legged heroes who fight alongside our men and women in the military. Today I want to single out another group—the wives. And not just military wives in general, but Gold Star Wives of America in particular.
These are the women (and now some men) who have stood behind their military spouses as they made the ultimate sacrifice—their lives. Every year our country celebrates Gold Star Wives Day on April 5. However, I think it’s important that we remember these brave spouses every day of the year.
Gold Star Wives is a Congressionally chartered non-profit service organization. (One of its original founders was Eleanor Roosevelt.) The charter was granted because GSW is the only service organization that provides aid to the surviving spouses of active duty and service-connected military. Their mission is to band together to help each other, reach out to widows and work to make sure surviving military spouses have the benefits to which they are entitled.

The Bible is clear that we are to reach out to those in need. Even though we are living in a tenuous time of peace, there are still Gold Star Wives all around us. Don’t wait for a special date to offer support. One of the greatest ways we can honor the service of those who paid the ultimate price is to help take care of the families they left behind.
