We had a bit of a heat wave last week in New York. When it finally broke on Friday, I went out for a little walk during lunchtime to run some errands.
It was so sunny and lovely outside, the kind of day that makes you thankful for living in New York City, even with its slow-as-molasses subways and questionable summertime sidewalk aromas.
“There’s got to be something miraculous going on today that I can blog about,” I thought to myself as I continued walking about. I wasn’t sure what exactly, so I turned things over to God. “Lord, show me something wondrous!”
The moment I thought those words another thought popped into my head: “What about yourself?”
I almost laughed out loud. Me? I couldn’t blog about myself being a wonder! That seemed a little cray-cray. And then a favorite quote from Augustine of Hippo came to mind:
“…men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.”
I had to smile. Sometimes I search far and wide for a miracle and completely forget that my very existence is pretty miraculous already. When you think about all the many, many things that had to come together for you to be on this earth at this very moment it’s pretty astounding. We are all miracles. Each and every one of us.
“Okay, God,” I thought to myself. “I see what you’re saying. Well played!”
