My husband Paul and I went out to dinner last night, and I ended up sitting where I had a perfect view of the large screen television in the restaurant. Olympic figure skating was on, and I enjoyed the extra details I was able to see on the huge screen.

My daddy gave me a love for ice skating. We went to the rink countless times during my growing-up years, and we often watched the Olympics together, enjoying the grace of the skaters as they sailed across the ice.

The sport has changed drastically through the years, and some of the twists, turns and jumps they do now are spectacular and mind-boggling. I especially love watching the couples skate, each movement done in perfect tandem as they glide together across the ice. It’s truly poetry in motion.

I watched as several couples performed on the screen, and then the camera cut away to the area where couples who would skate later were waiting in the wings. They were limbering up, and one man tossed his partner high into the air, catching her as she landed upside down in his arms.

I’d never thought about it before, but so much trust is required by those skaters. In some moments, their partners’ lives are literally in their hands. It’s taken months and years for them to perfect their craft, to build that trust, to become so in tune with each other that they can glide across the ice as one beautiful unit.

And then God whispered to my soul, “You need to have that kind of trust in Me.” Building a relationship with God doesn’t happen overnight. It takes months and years to achieve that closeness, to build that trust and to become so in tune with Him that we can glide through life as one beautiful unit.

And you know what? When we work to achieve that relationship with Him—and it becomes evident—we will touch the lives of others. Just as I watched those figure skaters on that big screen, other people are watching us to see how we live each day. I sure hope they see something of beauty. Don’t you?
