The Blessing of Supportive Friends

A writer appreciates her friends during her career.

I was on faculty recently at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. This is the conference where I got my start about 15 years ago, so it’s special whenever I go back there.

I usually teach multiple sessions, host a table at meals where I can talk with conferees, and often have between 40-50 private appointments with attendees. As the third day of appointments came to an end, I’d listened to numerous pitches as folks shared the ideas God placed on their hearts or asked me for advice on their writing journey.

And then I realized something as I looked across the room and saw Al Gansky and Eva Marie Everson—two of the people I’d had private appointments with so many years before when I was one of the conferees—the only reason I was on faculty there now was because countless people like them had invested in me. As a new writer, I’d pitched my book ideas to Al and Eva, and they’d encouraged me. Award-winning authors Yvonne Lehman and Steven James had welcomed me to their critique group and graciously shared their knowledge.

And Edie, Vonda, Linda, Lynette, Michelle and so many others became my writing buddies, offering encouragement, prayers and support along the way. I’d never have made it on this journey without them.

And that brings me to last week when I went on a four-day trip to the beach with some writer friends. I started not to go—especially since I’m on a tight book deadline. But then the friend who invited me said that all three of us were on deadline, and we’d make it a working trip.

With book releases and conferences, I’ve been gone from home a lot since early this winter. I’ve basically unpacked my suitcases so I could pack for the next trip. I felt bad about leaving again so I’d decided to stay home, but then my sweet husband said, “Honey, why don’t you go? It will be good for you.” I’d never make it without the support of this precious man who’s been my chief encourager and prayer cover. It moves me to tears to think about all the times he’s cleaned the kitchen, folded the laundry and lugged my suitcases to the car so I can chase the dreams God has for me.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the supportive people that God’s placed in my life. They are a blessing, and I want to give them a much-deserved shout-out today.

Who are the supportive people in your life? When’s the last time you thanked them for just being there for you? Today would be the perfect time to do that—and it would also be an ideal time to look for someone that you can support as well.
