Debbie Macomber: The Power of Prayer

Debbie shares memories of how she came to believe in the power of prayer.

[MUSIC PLAYING] When I was a child growing up, my mother had a plaque on the wall. It said, prayer changes things. And I saw that every day of my life as I was growing up. I’d walk into the house and it was the first thing I would see. And I came to believe that with all my heart. Prayer does change things. Talking to God changes things.

One of the reasons I have been drawn to Guideposts is because Guideposts is an organization of prayer. They believe in prayer.

About four or five years ago, I was invited to participate in the Good Friday Day of Prayer. I came to New York, and we gathered together as an organization, all of the employees were together, and there were all these prayer requests that people had mailed in, and we each took a stack of these prayers. Now these were complete strangers. I knew nothing about them, other than maybe their first name. And as we prayed together, there was such power in that room. You could feel it. You could taste it. It was such a magnificent experience as we gathered there, lifting these requests to God. And that has taught me such wonderful things about the power of prayer uniting us.

And that’s what Guideposts has done. They have got a prayer line, a prayer website, where you can go and give your prayer to somebody else. To say, I need help, would you pray with me, would you bring this to God with me. And you know, we don’t ever know how God answers these prayers because, again, these are people that I didn’t know, strangers. But yet, the power that I felt in that room, the Holy Spirit hovering with us there, lifting up, taking and soaking in our prayers. I just feel that He answered those prayers. And that’s why Guideposts is here, to listen, to help, to pray.
