Pray the Psalms: Psalm 57

Guideposts Executive Editor Rick Hamlin shares how to pray Psalm 57.

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi. It’s Rick Hamlin. Psalm 57. There’s a word in this psalm that we don’t use a whole lot now. The whole concept of mercy. Be merciful unto me, O Lord, be merciful unto me.

Quite frankly, the most recent time I wanted to say be merciful unto me was when a cop pulled me over for making an illegal left turn. Be merciful unto me. Don’t give me a ticket. He gave me a ticket anyway.

So why do we use this in our prayer life? For me, when I’m meditating, it’s a way to relax into the Lord’s presence. It’s a reminder of who’s in charge– like that cop. Be merciful unto me, O Lord, be merciful unto me. Psalm 57.
