Valet parking at the Providence Alaska Medical Center can be boring in the down times. Awhile back on a slow afternoon a coworker asked, “Hey? Any of you guys like to sing?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “At church.” Since there was nothing else to do, I gave them a sample. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound…” The guys joined in. Unbeknownst to us a visitor had been listening. “Thanks for the show,” she said when we finished. “I needed that.”

The three of us got together on our day off and practiced. Our three-part harmony now sounds pretty good. For the past six years, we’ve serenaded our patients and visitors with “My Girl,” “Good Night Sweetheart,” and the like.

Good health isn’t just about taking care of your body. Music is great medicine for the soul.
