Digital music wasn’t for me. Even today, my fifty-fourth birthday, I still enjoyed listening to vinyl as much as I did when I was a teenager. That was impossible now. With my turntable gone, and all my LPs ruined in storage, my music seemed to be a thing of the past.

I was browsing at a flea market and the sight of all the antiques had me reminiscing about my old record collection. “Got any turntables?” I asked the man at the counter.

“Got one in a few weeks ago,” he said. “Nice condition. Probably sold by now. Check in the back.” I followed a narrow aisle and there, in plain sight, was a turntable–with a stereo! I plugged it in and it worked like new. Attached was a huge price tag: $25. And no one has snatched it up. It was as if it was waiting for me.

I loaded my birthday present into the trunk. As I drove away I turned on my car stereo. Out came the soundtrack to the Broadway musical Mama Mia! The cast sang ABBA’s “Thank You for the Music.”

Time to start a new record collection: The Best of Bread, the soundtrack to Funny Girl, Linda Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams–I’m finding all my favorites. This old-fashioned girl is dancing to LPs again. Thank you for the music, Lord!
