[MUSIC PLAYING] There are nine choirs of angels in heaven, all singing the praises of God. The highest order of these choirs is the Seraphim, the fire makers. As the highest order of angels, Seraphim are the angels that stand closest to God. Referred to as the caretakers or protectors of God’s throne, they’re often pictured hovering above the heavenly throne. The illumination they receive from God they pass down to the angels below them. Many who have claimed to have seen Seraphim describe them as taking fantastic forms. Creatures with the body of an eagle or four faces or bright, luminous, red wings.

As their name, which comes from the ancient Hebrew word for “fire,” suggests, Seraphim are closely associated with fire. But what kind of fire burns in the Seraphim? Are they agents of destruction? No. The Seraphim burn with divine love, eternally sustained and consumed by its flame. In fact, their name is variously translated as fire makers and carriers of ardor.

The love that burns in the Seraphim is so bright that not even powerful angels like the Cherubim can look at it directly. But we humans can enjoy its warmth. It is a flame so bright, it lights the whole world. The warm, bright flame of God’s love for his creation.
