Everyone has dreams, and once in a while we get the courage to dream really, really big. Like changing careers. Starting a family. Buying our first home. Going back to school. Falling in love.
Last week I had the pleasure of watching two friends celebrate big dreams that came true. One of my friends dreamed of changing his career. The other dreamed of moving to a different country. Each of my friends had extenuating circumstances in their lives that made these dreams extremely difficult to pull off. Both of them spent about four years working toward these big dreams.
These two people had two very different ways of celebrating their accomplishments. One friend threw two huge parties for himself, ending the night by singing the Rocky theme song at the top of his lungs. The other friend arranged a small, quiet dinner where she announced the new goals she was working on.
I got a great deal of joy from being a part of these celebrations. So much joy that I had to ask myself, Why am I so happy? After all, it wasn’t one of my big dreams that came true, and I knew it was more than just the joy of seeing someone you love get their heart’s desire. Then it hit me: These celebrations reminded me that, yes, big dreams do come true. No wonder I was so thrilled!
I think sometimes we’re scared to dream big. Big dreams don’t always work out, so there’s the possibility we will be disappointed. And big dreams take a lot of hard work and commitment, so they are naturally intimidating. But over the course of a lifetime, everyone gets some of their biggest dreams realized. And there’s nothing that makes you feel quite as alive, or quite so close to God.
So dream big. There will always be angels—earth angels and heavenly angels alike—to help you make those big dreams come true.
