I was just talking to Guideposts Editor-in-Chief Edward Grinnan about an upcoming Angels on Earth cover.
We were going over illustration possibilities and settled on a different kind of angel for a change—a woodpecker, of all things! Of course once you read the story it illustrates, you’ll understand just how a backyard woodpecker can be a messenger of comfort and hope. An angel, that is.
“Our readers love birds,” I reminded Edward. “This cover will be one of our best.”
“And what about dogs?” he said. “Surely they love dogs. Has there ever been a dog on the cover of Angels on Earth?”
Now that he made me think about it, there hasn’t! Even though we run lots of stories about angelic dogs and know how important animals of all kinds are in our readers’ lives. We’ve featured some wonderful illustrations of dogs in our pages, too. We’ve just never put one on the cover.
Note to self: Find a really great angelic dog story so we can feature the noble beast on our cover. In fact, if you have a great story about you and your dog, email it to submissions@angelsonearth.org, or write us at Angels on Earth, 110 William Street, Suite 901, New York, NY 10038.
Meanwhile I’ll invite Edward’s golden retriever, Millie, to come back to my office and be an angel. Here she is, resting on my couch, admiring my guardian angel pillow.
