Do angels make themselves known to us today? Do they appear to people, as they are both living and dying? Do our guardian angels direct our path, stop us from making wrong decisions and protect us from harm? Do we think angels only happen in stories and in scripture but not really in our world today?

When dying patients tells you there is an angel in the room, trust me: You believe them. When they tell you the angels are beautiful, very tall and wearing robes of translucent white—when their stories are always the same—you listen. When the experiences happen to young and old, rich and poor, churched and unchurched, and when they are never afraid of what they’ve seen, you tend to be attentive to their words.

When a seven-year-old asks you if you’d seen the angel standing near the altar during Mass, you know he saw an angel. When a young girl involved in an auto accident is thrown from her car and a boy in the car behind her sees an angel lifting her up, you hear his words. When that girl dies later that night, you know who took her home to heaven. Angels are God’s gift to all of us. They are with us from birth until they accompany us on our final journey home. It is good for us to have a daily conversation with them so that we recognize them when they do.
