Springtime Guardian Angel

She had always told her son he had an angel by his side. Little did she know, she did too.

At six years old, my son Keith was a bundle of energy. He was always on the go. He especially loved playing in the yard. And today was the perfect day for it—bright and sunny. Keith ran over to the swing, which hung from an old oak tree. “Push me,” he called, climbing onto the wooden seat.

Keith was my later-in-life baby, born 10 years after my next-youngest child. With four doting siblings, I’m not sure Keith’s feet touched the ground at all during his first few years of life—it seemed like someone was always carrying him!

Of course, Keith’s siblings weren’t the only ones by his side. I’d taught all my children that guardian angels watched over them. With so many caring eyes on Keith, I knew he would be safe.

Keith took a seat on the wooden swing. I grabbed the ropes and gave him a big push.

“I have an idea,” I said. “Let’s play spider.”

“Spider?” Keith asked.

“Here, I’ll show you. I sit down on the swing, and you sit on my lap, facing me. We’ll look like a spider swinging through the sky!”

I took the seat. Keith climbed onto my lap. “You ready?” I said. “Let’s fly!”

I kicked us off from the ground and pumped my legs. The breeze cooled my face as we gained height. This feels just like flying, I thought while we soared back and forth.

We swung until it was time for lunch. Back on the porch steps, Keith hugged my leg. We stopped and turned back once more to look at our tree swing. In that very instant, the rope on the left side of the swing slipped from its branch.

The wooden plank where Keith and I had just been sitting—flying!—dropped like a trapdoor. Keith and I looked at each other in disbelief. “Did you see that?” we said at the same time.

“We could have really gotten hurt if that rope had come undone while we were swinging,” Keith said, his eyes big.

“I wonder how it stayed secure with all our weight on it,” I said. It didn’t make any sense.

“I know!” Keith said. “My guardian angel. She must have held the rope for us.” I’d always told Keith angels were watching over him. That day, he reminded me that angels watched over moms too.
