Weddings. Parties. Camping. A trip to see family. Sometimes it seems like my calendar fills itself while I’m not looking. Summer is typically a busy time, but this year it’s ridiculous! Nearly every weekend has been booked since May, with no reprieve in sight. Add my commute to and from New York and I barely have time to think.
I’ll never have a rest, I thought. Not unless I make it happen. So last weekend, after returning from yet another long-distance trip, I decided I was going to do nothing for the rest of the day. No housework. No driving anywhere. Nothing. I settled into the couch with a bowl of popcorn and turned on a movie.
That was nice. For a little while. But soon I was antsy. I asked my husband if he wanted to go for a walk. Or maybe out to a sushi restaurant? What were our local friends up to? My mind bounced everywhere. I found myself thinking about the true angel stories I’d read at work. Then about the bridesmaid dress I had to buy for an upcoming wedding.
What am I doing? I’m supposed to be relaxing! I thought. I tried to imagine a blank calendar. Just an expanse of empty days.
But I couldn’t do it.
Then it hit me: My packed schedule is a blessing. Without all these events and obligations, my calendar wouldn’t be the only thing left blank. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, taking a moment to appreciate the fun I have on those busy days. And the memories I make with people I love.
If you’re searching for earth angels, just take a look at your friends and family—and then make some plans! You won’t regret it.
