A friend of mine was dying very quickly with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS. She had been very beautiful, creative, fun, active and loved by many. This illness struck fast and hard but she was determined to live her days as fully as she could, for as long as she could. When that was no longer possible, she prepared for her next step into eternal life.
She had recently come back to the church of her youth and was very peaceful and happy to be there. She could be seen at morning Mass, praying quietly by herself and sensing deeply that for her, life was about to change. The calm that met you at her door when visiting was palpable. The beautiful king-size bed, covered with fluffy pillows and soft sheets, seemed to envelop her like a cloud.
One evening, she decided she wanted to have her picture taken in the garden surrounded by all of her grandchildren. It was arranged with care and ease in spite of her condition. Sitting on a bench with children clothed in a rainbow of color, she was a lovely sight indeed.
The next evening when the doorbell rang, an envelope containing the pictures was found on the step. They reflected a beautiful woman, looking not at all as if she were dying, and surrounded by many little ones. A halo of light, covering her hair, was breathtaking to see. For all the world, it appeared she had already arrived at her heavenly destination. I have never thought otherwise.
She died the next day.
