I have been in friends’ homes that have beautifully coordinated Christmas trees, the kind that look as if they fell out of the pages of a design magazine. But that’s not me. I have an eclectic collection of ornaments, and we cram as many as possible on the tree every year.

I have sentimental, old favorites like the little frames that contain pictures of my daughter as a baby. I have ornaments from different seasons in my life, such as the ones given to me by children when I was teaching preschool. I have bright, beautiful ones, and tired, old ones that seem to fade into the background. Then, I have some that make you wonder why in the world is that even an ornament?

A different kind of Christmas ornament, a flying snowman. One of my daughter’s favorites falls into that latter category. It is a flying snowman. Technically it is a parachuting snowman, but he looks like he is flying.

I’ve had the ornament since before my daughter Jessa was born, but as soon as she was old enough, she claimed it and looked forward to seeing him every year. He is a unique, jolly little fellow that doesn’t seem to have a care in the world except to make you smile.

As I sit and look at all the ornaments, I can’t help but conclude that the people we know fall into many of the same categories.

Some people are close friends, those we treasure. We all know people who light up a room when they walk into it.

Don’t we also know those who are tired and worn from life or just seem to fade into the background? Finally, there are people in our lives that we consider just different. We may even wonder if they belong at all.

In the Bible we read, “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)

These verses tell us that Jesus came for all people, not just our favorites. He came for us but he also came for those who are different from us.

I challenge you to remember that the baby born in the manger was a gift to us all. So, this year seek out those who need to hear the good news, even the unique flying snowmen types in your life, and tell them the Christmas story is for them, too.
