How to Be Blessed by God

Is it “luck” or putting yourself out there? Listening to your inner voice? Not dwelling on ill fortune? Here’s some help in getting your prayers answered.

Are some people just lucky? What about the rest of us? A colleague recently passed along an article about a British psychology professor named Dr. Richard Wiseman—yes, Wiseman—who believes that “luck” can be changed. In his book, The Luck Factor, he laid out a few ways people can improve their fortunes.

All these things are also surefire ways to experience more mysterious ways in your life:

1)  Lucky people just try stuff.
Mysterious Ways reader Vernon Kemplin found that out when he tried to fix his furnace one last time… and discovered a card that led him to the right man for the job.  Jayne Finck-Redmond was only 10 years old when she tried going to church to cure her stutter—and found the healing she needed. The lesson? Put yourself out there—miracles won’t always come and find you.

2)  Lucky people trust their intuition.
“Almost 90 percent of lucky people said that they trusted their intuition when it came to personal relationships, and almost 80 percent said it played a vital role in their career choices… when unlucky people got those feelings, they didn’t follow them because they didn’t know where they came from.”

We’ve published endless examples of people listening to that “mysterious voice.” A soldier in Vietnam who escaped his bunk minutes before a mortar round struck. An unemployed woman, who found her dream job. Or our assistant editor Daniel Kessel, who reluctantly volunteered to be bumped from a flight and was rewarded with much more than a free flight voucher. The takeaway? Trust that little voice God gave you.

3)  “Lucky people do not dwell on their ill fortune.
When things get tough you’ve got two choices: you can either fold or you can keep going. Lucky people are very resilient.”

Beth Hill Praed found this out shortly after she was diagnosed with MS. She went from Mrs. “Why me?” to a best-selling author, thanks to a dream that told her to “get started.” Heidi Siefkas found out her husband was cheating on her—and then got knocked out by a falling branch. Today she says, “It was a blessing in disguise that touched every part of my life.” The message? If you look up instead of down when a bad thing happens, you’ll find a way forward.

For more on how to experience more miracles, check out this article by Thomas Moore, it’s all about opening yourself up to better hear what God is trying to say. “One thing I believe strongly is that each of us has an inner voice, a tool to help us navigate through life,” Thomas told us. “Yet so often that voice gets lost in the daily din of living.”
