That’s what happened to writer Ellen Gillette, who was recently featured in Mysterious Ways magazine. After the death of her son, Ellen found herself haunted by the number 22. It was only later that the number took on a new significance for Ellen. One of healing and hope. You can read more about that story here.
I worked with Ellen on her story for Mysterious Ways. When I hung up the phone after our first conversation, I glanced at the time and saw it was 2:22 p.m. I emailed Ellen right away. It seemed like a little sign.
Oddly enough, that wasn’t the first time I had a strange experience with the number 22. It happens to be my sister Priscilla’s favorite number. She says she likes the symmetry of it. (I think it’s because she’s a twin and 22 seems like a twin-like number!).
A few years ago, Priscilla and I were searching for an apartment together in New York City. After months of looking, we finally found a place in a high-rise building. It was a great place, but it was hard not to feel uneasy about such a big decision. Especially one that came with so many fees and deposits! Adding to the stress was the fact that we’d have to put up a temporary wall in the apartment to section off one of the bedrooms. (That probably sounds crazy, but fake walls are pretty common in New York City!)

And then something happened that eased our fears. There were a few open apartments in the building and the realtor had originally put us down for Apartment 24D. But, at the last minute, he switched it to 22D.
Priscilla’s favorite number and my first initial. Maybe it was silly, but we took it as a sign. About a week before we moved in, we got another surprise. The super had decided to put up a fake wall in 22D free of charge. We weren’t sure if it was a mistake or a random act of kindness. But those two little wonders told us that we were exactly where we needed to be.
