Where’s My Miracle?

God's designs are not always what we can imagine.

Diana Aydin

Please, God, give me a miracle!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve prayed that prayer countless times. Usually when I’m stressing out big time. You know, those times when nothing short of a miracle will do.

So what do you do if you pray like crazy, plead with God, but still no miracle arrives?

The clover leaf ball gown by designer Charles James at the Metropolitan Museum of ArtI was pondering that very question the other day when a different thought popped into my head. Well, an image, really…of a ball gown.

No, I’m not thinking of investing in some elegant eveningwear! The dress was actually one I’d seen a few months earlier at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute. A stunning “Clover Leaf” ball gown from 1953 with a voluminous, clover-shaped skirt.

It was part of an innovative exhibit on designer Charles James, whose groundbreaking designs from the mid-1900’s left a last impression on the world of fashion. On the surface, the gowns on display were beautiful, yes. But just fabric, really. Until you took a closer look.

Video screens near each piece revealed what was going on beyond the fabric using x-rays and animations–the brilliant structures and geometric patterns that gave each gown its distinctive shape. It was unbelievable, like uncovering an unknown world hidden beneath folds of fabric.

James’ gowns are so much more than pretty dresses. They’re works of architectural genius. And he was more than a dressmaker. He was a master of engineering.

So what does that have to do with miracles?

Well, sometimes we only see the surface of our lives, just like those yards of silk–it’s hard to see past the problems and issues that demand our attention on a daily basis.

Rarely do we get a glimpse beneath it to see the way God is working behind the scenes, carefully orchestrating and engineering things in ways more complex than anything we could’ve possibly imagined.

Still waiting for a miracle? Don’t give up! Perhaps a miracle is coming, perhaps it’s already unfolding, perhaps it looks nothing like what we imagined. God is working on it, though, even if we can’t see it at first glance.
