Today’s guest blogger is Mysterious Ways associate editor Diana Aydin.

Last Wednesday, I had pie fever. I was on the train with my sister Priscilla, going to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving after participating in a Mysterious Ways Pie Bake-Off competition.

There’d been apple pie, mini cranberry pies, even s’mores pie. In the end, our copy chief, Kate Norris, won by a landslide with her heavenly “Coconut Cream Dream Pie.” Now I couldn’t stop thinking about flaky crusts and gooey fillings.

“You know what I really want to eat at Thanksgiving?” I said. “A nice piece of pie!”

Priscilla laughed. “That’s not gonna happen.”

I knew she was right. My family’s originally from Turkey, and while our traditional desserts are delicious–Turkish delight and baklava, for example–pie never really made an appearance at our table. Still, I dreamed of a holiday with all the traditional dishes, from sweet potatoes with mini marshmallows to pies as far as the eye could see.

I checked my Instagram account from the train. My other sister, Kristin, was already home and had just posted photos of two desserts she’d decided to bake at the last minute–pumpkin pie and pecan pie! I couldn’t believe it. We arrived home just as the pies were ready to come out of the oven.

But it didn’t end there. I returned to work on Monday and discovered a bright blue container of–yes!–more pie waiting for me in the refrigerator. Editor Amy Wong had baked a “Salty Honey Pie” over the weekend and brought some for me to try.

I couldn’t help but think about the season of wonder we’ve just entered. On the first Christmas, three wise men brought gifts that the holy family never expected. So it’s only fitting that as we celebrate the holidays, we also receive surprising blessings. And, if we’re lucky, lots and lots of pie!
