The Gift of the Present Moment

Listen carefully to those whom God puts around you, who speak about “treasuring the moments” given to you.

“Live your life every day to the fullest, until there are no more tomorrows left to you.”

This was said to me more than 50 years ago, by a patient in my care, who had recently been widowed. She had seen her young husband die very suddenly in front of her and the finality of it all was overwhelming. She wanted me to understand that “the present moment” is a gift, a very fragile and precious gift that would not last forever.

The young parents, holding their new baby, born with only a partial brain stem, know they will have her for just a few short hours and treasure every “ moment” given to them. When she dies during the night, the nurses fully understand their request to place the baby in the master bed so they can sleep with her, just for the night.

Listen carefully to those whom God puts around you, who speak about “treasuring the moments” given to you. It is often He who speaks to us through others. He calls us to slow down, to rest, to savor the moment and to live fully every moment He gives to us. It is a gift.
