Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. —2 Timothy 2:3–4 (NIV)

One of the great things about my ministry at Guideposts is working with military chaplains. During my recent visit to the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, I saw firsthand their mission in action. They make Marines who are committed to their core values in service to the country.

The first thing the drill instructor does is take full control of the recruits. In the first few days, they learn a new vocabulary, the rules of engagement, and how to eat, shower and wear their uniforms the Marine way. If recruits arrive at boot camp overweight, the drill instructor will put them on a diet.

My visit got me thinking that I, too, like a recruit, must surrender, follow and be willing to give up control to God. The control factor often gets in the way of God turning me into one of His finest disciples. I don’t always want to pray or read my Bible or respond kindly or forgive people who say hurtful things to me. Jesus said, “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39). Some days this seems like a tall order.

On my last day, I attended the graduation at the Peatross Parade Deck. What a sight as hundreds of recruits lined up to officially become US Marines. I felt proud to be American and humbled by their courage and commitment. I headed home, ready to discover the changes that take place when I submit to God’s love.

Dear God, help me to daily submit to Your loving leadership, so You can transform my heart for Your glory.
