A few months ago, I left a good job, not because I had somewhere to go but because I felt I was following Jesus’ leading. Several well-meaning friends wanted to know if I was running away from anything, since I was not moving on to something better. Yet I knew my decision was soundly based on verses Jesus revealed to me, His whispered affirmation, and the voices of wise mentors. As difficult as it was, I resigned.
One of my favorite hymns says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey” (John H. Sammis). I was not happy at first. In fact, depression set in. I was blindsided by shame, doubts, and negative thoughts brought on by an accomplishment-driven society. But Jesus was patiently leading me toward His goal, even when I could not see it.

Right now I am working for my elderly parents, spending precious time with them in their twilight years. My mother’s gardens are flourishing, their home is becoming organized, and my father and I are working on his memoir. Furthermore, Jesus is meeting my financial needs—He always makes abundant provision for His plans.
Jesus, please confirm what it is You want me to forsake for Your sake. Then help me to obey and trust You for Your blessing. Amen.
