Truly Love God’s Word

I wanted to look forward to reading the Bible every day, to savor God’s word and not just read it because I knew it pleased God.

I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. —Psalm 119:14 (TNIV)

I used to think of Psalm 119 as just the longest chapter in the Bible, another psalm worshipping God. Then I took the challenge of reading the Bible in 90 days. It’s not as crazy as it sounds.

The upside is I got through Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy in two days each! Thirty minutes of Bible reading almost every day had me complete it in a little less than four months.

When reading through Psalms, suddenly the words seemed more intense, more powerful. What especially struck me was Psalm 119, where David seemed to absolutely love God’s Word. I couldn’t relate. Given a choice, I’d pick up a novel. I read my Bible because I knew it pleased God, not because I loved it.

I wanted to love God’s Word. I wanted to look forward to reading it every day. I wanted it to fill my heart with the same joy King David had (Psalm 119:48, TNIV), but I also knew it couldn’t happen because of anything I could do.

A love for God’s Word had to come from within. So I started praying for God to teach me to love His Word. It is happening slowly, and I am learning to truly crave it every day.

Lord, thank You for the beauty of Your Word. Amen.
