The righteous will be remembered forever. Psalm 112:6 (NAS)

A plaque among attractive flowerbeds on the grounds of a church I once attended read, “She saw beauty in flowers.” And in the children’s courtyard another inscription said, “She loved children.” As I read these brief words describing two women I had never met, I began to think about how I might want to be remembered in a simple sentence:

“She saw the courage in every elderly person.”
“She liked to kick in autumn leaves.”
“She needed God.”
“She cried over the wonder of words.”
“Her favorite name for Jesus was Morning Star.”
“She befriended her neighbors.”
“She always wanted to live in a tree house.”
“She loved her name: Carol, song of joy.”

One sentence can tell a magnificent story. Condensing my life in this way is much like reducing a sauce by simmering it on the stove. I get the fullest, richest flavor of who I am—and I can offer this to God for His good work. Why not try it?

Lord, help me concentrate on the essentials—the beautiful, simple, truthful things.
