A Glorious Sign from Heaven

A grieving daughter receives God’s reassurance her mom is okay.

A comet speeding across the nightsky helps a grieving daughter

For great is Your love, higher than the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Psalm 108:4

Plumes of white mist hovered over the bubbling water as I sat in our hot tub on a frigid night. The sky was intensely black, a perfect backdrop for a universe of dazzling pinpoints of light. I took a deep breath and released it slowly, wishing the soothing water would absorb the depth of loss I felt.

I missed my mother terribly. It had been about one month since she had died at the age of 94. She had lived a long and vibrant life, full of appreciation for God’s wonders, which she often described as “exquisite!” How she would have loved this night.

“Mother,” I said out loud, “are you out there somewhere?” Even if she is, I thought, her brightness would be eclipsed by tonight’s radiant stars. That thought had barely formed when the largest, most brilliant, most magnificent comet I have ever seen streaked across the sky and then fizzled out as quickly as it had come.

An intense joy filled me. I laughed out loud. I clapped. I knew without a doubt that all was well with my mother. I could almost hear her say, “Wasn’t that exquisite?”

Thank You, Lord God, that out of Your goodness and Your love, You even open up the heavens to us.
