Archimedes the Owl

An injured owl that depends on the care of others reminds us to trust in the Lord.

Bear Hollow Zoo is a small zoo located in Athens, Georgia. The zoo is home to a variety of animals from Georgia’s native wildlife.

Many of the mammals there were orphaned when they were younger or were injured and not capable of being released in the wild.

My daughter, Lauren, has been an intern at the Bear Hollow Zoo the past two summers. She also volunteers her time frequently. During December, she dresses up as the zoo’s bear mascot that is aptly named “Skippy” after her because she skips along while working.

Archimedes is a gray screech owl whose gender is unknown. “He” was brought to Bear Hollow in December 2013 after being released from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.

There is permanent injury to his left wing, so he would not be able to fly like needed in the wild. He is an adolescent, mellow bird and is used for educational purposes.

Lauren let me know a staff member was bringing some of the birds out to the exercise yard. The birds are brought out to give them fresh air, sunlight and to teach the public. They are tethered to the handler by a leash so they won’t fly away.

I drove to the zoo and was very excited the handler brought out many birds for me to enjoy and photograph.

Just as Archimedes trusts the workers at Bear Hollow Zoo and depends on their love, daily care, and nurturing, we too need to depend on the Lord’s care for us. He knows our every need!

Will you give your burdens and care to the Lord trusting Him to take care of you?

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. (Psalm 91:4, NLT)
